6 of the Strongest, High-THC Cannabis Strains

byMichael Warford5 minutes

Potent strains of marijuana with a high tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) content have always had a central place in cannabis culture. Like many people, you may enjoy a high-THC marijuana strain in order to relax or socialize with friends.

Or perhaps you rely on a potent strain of cannabis to help alleviate a medical condition. If you suffer from severe and chronic pain, migraines or PTSD, for example, high-THC cannabis may be just what you need to find relief. As well, those suffering from cancer often find that a strong marijuana strain helps relieve some of the worst symptoms of their disease and the uncomfortable side effects of chemotherapy.

Whether you’re consuming cannabis recreationally or for medicinal purposes, potent strains are an excellent way to relax, boost your energy and enjoy the psychoactive properties of THC.

We give you a brief rundown of six of the most powerful marijuana strains and how you can most benefit from each one. Be aware, however, that when it comes to high-THC cannabis, you should start off with a low dose and work your way up, especially if you’re a cannabis newbie or an infrequent cannabis consumer.

1. For an Extremely Powerful Dose of THC, Try Ghost Train Haze

Ghost Train Haze cannabis strain

With a THC content between 23–28%, Ghost Train Haze is definitely one of the most potent cannabis strains you’re likely to come across.

Bred in Colorado as a cross between Ghost OG and Neville’s Wreck, Ghost Train Haze is a sativa-dominant strain, but blanketed in crystal-like trichomes that are more commonly seen in indica plants.

In low to moderate doses, Ghost Train Haze, which has won multiple Cannabis Cups, is great for tackling depression, pain and for increasing concentration. Because of its high THC levels, however, it’s best to go slow. Those who suffer from anxiety, or a lower THC tolerance should probably opt for a different marijuana strain altogether.

2. Looking for a Whale of a Time? Check Out Moby Dick

Moby Dick cannabis strain

Bred in Amsterdam, Moby Dick’s name comes from its high cultivation yields. That said, it’s also a good way to describe its THC content, which clocks in at 21–27%.

This award-winning sativa’s sweet, citrusy aroma reflects its uplifting nature. Consumers tend to experience an intense wave of euphoria and cerebral stimulation followed by a moderate body buzz.

Moby Dick is an excellent choice if you’re looking for a marijuana strain that will stimulate deep and engaging conversations with friends. It’s also been used with success by those suffering from:

  • Depression
  • Stress
  • Mild pain

3. Take OG Kush for a Relaxing Night in With Cannabis

OG Kush cannabis strain

OG Kush is another heavy hitter, with a THC content of between 19–26%. But it’s one more likely to lead to a deep sense of relaxation than euphoria.

So, if you’re looking to just sit back and relax, this is the cannabis strain to choose. OG Kush’s mellowing effect makes it great for those dealing with:

  • Stress
  • Depression
  • Mood disorders

Folks suffering from nausea and gastrointestinal problems also often find relief with this indica-dominant hybrid. But if you’re looking for an energy boost, this strain probably isn’t for you.

4. Try Sour Diesel if You Want a Cannabis Strain to Stimulate Your Mind

Sour Diesel cannabis strain

For a completely different high than that of OG Kush, try Sour Diesel. This sativa strain promotes a cerebral and stimulating high, with consumers often feeling uplifted and better able to focus.

As with many high-THC strains, however, newcomers should go easy as a heavy dose could induce paranoia. While highly stimulating, Sour Diesel is also calming, which is why it’s long been a popular choice for people suffering from:

  • ADD/ADHD
  • Depression
  • Stress

Bear in mind though that, as a source of pain relief, Sour Diesel’s effects are somewhat limited.

5. Turn to Bruce Banner for a Hulk-Sized Dose of THC

Not surprisingly, a cannabis strain named for the Hulk’s human form also packs one of the heaviest punches with THC levels of 24–29%. This sativa-dominant hybrid’s effects tend to begin in the head with a sense of euphoria, followed by a relaxing body buzz. It’s an excellent strain for managing:

  • ADD/ADHD
  • Depression
  • Stress

Thanks to its ability to provide full-body relaxation, Bruce Banner is an ideal choice for managing chronic pain while still giving consumers enough energy to tackle the day. As with other high-THC cerebral strains on this list, use this marijuana strain in moderation as a high dose may induce paranoia.

6. For an Uplifting & Relaxing Cannabis Strain, Try White Fire OG

White Fire OG cannabis strain

One of the most popular cannabis strains for medical marijuana patients, White Fire OG is also one of the most potent, with a THC level of up to 30%.

This sativa-dominant hybrid can have vastly different effects depending on dosage and the tolerance of the consumer. In low to moderate doses, it stimulates a cerebral high and leaves you with enough energy to tackle the day. But in higher doses, it can put consumers straight to sleep. Once you get the dosage right, it’s great for:

  • Pain management
  • Migraines
  • Glaucoma

Cancer patients also commonly take White Fire OG to stimulate appetite and combat nausea.
